All about Valtrex.
Valtrex is a drug that is used in the management of some viral infections. It is used in treating herpes zoster, herpes simplex and herpes B. Valtrex is the company brand name, while the generic name is known as Valacyclovir.
Valtrex is also used to treat cold in children aged over 12 years and chickenpox in children aged 2 years. It should be noted that viral infections are difficult to treat, hence only management is possible so as to reduce the severity of the infections. Therefore, Valtrex is not meant to cure herpes. It is used for management purpose to boost body immune system, lower the pain, helps and faster healing of sore.
Pre-cautions
While under medication one should abstain from unprotected sex since the drug does not prevent transmission of Herpes.
When one have the open sores avoid direct contact as this can lead to transmission
One may experience kidney problem if it interacts with other drugs and alcohol.

For pregnant mothers, they should use the drug with close monitoring from the doctor. Valtrex can be passed to infants through breastfeeding thus always talk to your doctor for the safety of your baby.
Side effects

Mild ones include,
- Feeling dizzy
- Vomiting
- Headache
- Nausea
More serious side effects include,
- Difficulties while speaking
- Mental distraction
- Difficulties while walking
Most of severe side effects occurs if a person is under another type of medication which is interfering with their immune system e.g. HIV or cancer. Such patients might experience;
- Irregular heartbeat
- Urine color change
- Yellowing of skin
- Visual disruption
- Fever

Valtrex comes in form of tablets, each having 500 or 1g
Prescription of the drug depends with the type of infection.
Herpes zoster; it is supposed to be taken after every eight hours (3 times a day) for a period of seven days.
Herpes simplex/ genital herpes; two times a day for a period of ten days.
It advisable to complete the full dosage to prevent the virus from developing resistance to the drug.
Overdose
If you take an overdose, seek medical assistance immediately.
Some of the signs of overdose include,
- Unconsciousness
- Severe tiredness
- Mental distraction
In case you miss a dose, never take the double the dose as you will be overdosing.
