Doxycycline is part of the Tetracycline family of anti-biotics. They function by inhibiting the growth of bacterial proteins which infections need to produce to survive and live on. They do not actually kill them. Doxycycline slows the multiplication of these proteins thus giving the immune system a chance to rebuild. How to take

Some important things to remember when taking Doxycycline are be sure to drink plenty of water or other hydrating fluids to prevent dehydration and irritations of the throat that doxycycline can sometimes cause. Doxycycline works best without food, however, if an upset stomach or irritations do occur, there are certain Tetracycline that can be taken with food. For the drug to work properly, maintaining even levels of the anti-biotic in your system is important. Also taking it at the same time each day while you’re on it will help keep the levels in the blood at a constant.

Dosage
For adults, 100mg to 200mg per day for seven to fourteen days is the recommended dosage to treat most types of bacterial infections. More serious or chronic (long-term) infections require treatments for longer periods of time. For children ages eight and up, doxycycline dosages are based on a weight chart. Normally 1mg to 2mg per pound of body weight with children. This is common for children eight and up. Treatment with doxycycline is not recommended during pregnancy unless the potential benefits of the medication outweigh the possible risks to the fetus. Doxycycline can cause permanent tooth discoloration during the second half of the pregnancy when the baby’s teeth are forming. Through the mother’s minerals being passed to the baby, doxycycline can permanently incorporate itself into the bones and can have very adverse effects.

Contraindications
People with certain medical conditions such as liver disease or failure, kidney disease or failure, food or dye allergies, frequent yeast infections, or if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, should discuss doxycycline with their doctor before starting a doxycycline treatment.
